Ahmir Thompson was born in Philadelphia on January 20, 1971, into a musical household. Arthur Lee Andrews Thompson was his father from Goldsboro, North Carolina.
As a performer, he became known as Lee Andrews and led the 1950s doo-wop group Lee Andrews & the Hearts.
Jacquelin Thompson, Ahmir’s mother, and his father were members of the Philadelphia-based soul group Congress Alley.
His parents did not want to leave him with babysitters, so they took him on tour. He grew up in the backstage areas of doo-wop concerts.
Thompson began drumming on stage at shows at seven, and by the age of thirteen, he had become a musical director.
Questlove was enrolled by his parents at the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts.
He and his friend Tariq Trotter had formed the Square Roots by graduating.

Questlove used to consume everything without regard to his health, which caused him to gain weight.
He kept doing this even after witnessing many of his pals pass away from strokes while they were in their 40s.
When Questlove decided to make a lifestyle shift, he began by drastically altering his nutrition. He abandoned all his harmful eating habits and began eating a healthy and balanced diet.
Questlove prioritized vegan foods in his new diet. However, he avoided carbohydrate-rich foods such as gluten, wheat, and dairy. He concentrated on eating more green veggies and fresh fruits.
In addition to diet, Questlove has been practicing other better habits. He realized that following a healthy diet was not the only way to live a healthier lifestyle, so he also began incorporating other things into his life.
Thompson has lost 56 pounds since beginning the strict diet and now weighs 350 pounds.
The hardworking DJ cannot ingest white carbohydrates, fruit, or calorie drinks while on a rigorous diet.
Thompson is not allowed to eat the same meals regularly, but he is allowed to binge eat once a week.
