Roy Herron was raised in Weakley County, Tennessee, where his ancestor was among the first two settlers in the 1820s. Herron was an Eagle Scout and grew up helping out on his family’s farm.
In 1975, Herron received his highest honors diploma from the University of Tennessee at Martin.
Herron served as the ninth Governor of the Tennessee Intercollegiate State Legislature, a group of college students that is active throughout the state. He was the organization’s Lieutenant Governor before becoming Governor.
He attended the University of St. Andrews in Scotland as a Rotary Scholar in 1975 and 1976. One of the first two dual-degree Vanderbilt University graduates in 1980, he received a J.D. and an M.Div.

Roy Herron, a longstanding state senator from Tennessee and the previous leader of the Democratic Party in that state, passed away on Sunday due to injuries he incurred in a jet ski accident.
Herron passed away in Nashville’s Vanderbilt Medical Centre, his family said.
According to his family’s Caring Bridge page, he had been hospitalized ever since a collision with another jet ski on Kentucky Lake on July 1 that left him with severe injuries to his arm and pelvis and internal bleeding.
The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency was investigating the incident, the specifics of which were unavailable at the time.
Herron, an attorney from Dresden, Tennessee, spent 26 years in the Tennessee House and Senate, where he rose to become floor leader and Democratic caucus chair.
According to his website, he only missed a day of class when his youngest son was born. From 2013 to 2015, he was the chairman of the state Democratic Party.
